Dead Parrot, also known as the “Parrot Sketch”, is a comedy sketch by the British group Monty Python. It was performed by John Cleese as the dissatisfied customer Mr. Praline and Michael Palin as the owner of a pet shop. The sketch first appeared on the television series Monty Python’s Flying Circus and became one of the group’s best-known routines.
The scene begins when Mr. Praline returns to a pet shop to complain that a Norwegian Blue parrot he has recently purchased is dead. The shopkeeper repeatedly denies this obvious fact, claiming that the bird is merely resting, stunned, or “pining for the fjords”. As the argument continues, Praline produces increasingly absurd evidence of the parrot’s death, including the discovery that it had been nailed to its perch.
The sketch reaches its comic climax when Praline launches into an elaborate series of expressions for death, finally declaring the bird to be an “ex-parrot”. Much of the humour comes from the contrast between Praline’s mounting frustration and the shopkeeper’s increasingly implausible excuses.
“Dead Parrot” is frequently cited as a classic example of Monty Python’s style, combining wordplay, repetition, escalation and surreal logic. Several phrases from the sketch, particularly “pining for the fjords” and “ex-parrot”, have entered British popular culture and are often used humorously to describe something that is clearly defunct despite claims to the contrary.
